TYPES OF STAINLESS STEEL
Stainless Steels are divided
into 3 general classifications:
- "AUSTENTIC" consists of the 18-8 or Type
300 series and is considered CHROMIUM-NICKEL because they contain up to 8% NICKEL.
Non-magnetic & offering the greatest degree of
corrision resistance, this type can't be hardened by heat.
- "MARTENSITIC" consists of 12%-20% CHROMIUM and is magnetic & hardenable;
examples would be Type 410 & 416.
- "FERRITIC" alloys are also Chromium Stainless Steel alloys such as Type 430.
They can not be heat treated & are magnetic.
